European Exploration.

European explorations are the events that started in the second half of the 15th century and continued until the 17th century. This period in history is known as the age of discovery. In this period, the Europeans explored the whole world with an aim of expanding their trade with other nations of the world. Some Europeans however sailed due to curiosity to learn about the outside world. The information obtained by the sailors was very useful in the development of geographical knowledge which later enabled the European nations to establish colonies in different parts of the world.

The desire to know and discover is a typical human nature and therefore the famous European sailors had a great desire to explore the world and gather new knowledge. However, they did not have the funds to sponsor their desire to explore the world. Therefore, the major reason for the European exploration was the need for new trade partners especially dealing with silk and spices. In the mid 15th century, the fall of the Byzantine Empire closed the link between Europe and Asia. Europe was previously obtaining spices from Asia therefore a need to find new trade route was created. Access to North Africa and the Middle East which was also a main trade route was also blocked.

The Portuguese were among the first to sent sailors to different parts of the world with Bartholomeu Dias being the first European to sail up to the southern tip of Africa. Another well known Portuguese, Vasco da Gama was able to sail around Africa and reach India. Following these successful voyage, different European governments and rich businessmen sponsored sailors to Africa and Asia with an aim of establishing trade partnership.
